SMART Goals – The Simple but Effective Way to Set Goals!
Now that we have learned the
ABC of G.O.A.L.S
, let us take a step further to understand what does it take to set SMART goals.
Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely
Effective and meaningful personal goals must contain each of the elements stated above. Let explore what each of the elements mean! 1) Specific 2) Measureable 3) Attainable 4) Realistic 5) Timely
A goal must be specific, and not a general statement of goals. You must be able to measure the success of the goals. The goals must be attainable and realistic and have timeframe to it. Good SMART goals must be able to answer the 5W and 1H. Who are involved, what do I want to accomplish, what can I do to get there, where should I start, When do I start, which are my constraints to achieve the goals, why do I want to accomplish the goals, and how do I get there. A bad example: I want to be a manager. A good example: I want to be a regional manager in company xxx within 2 years from now.
From this specific goal, it allows you to visualize yourself where you want to be in 2 years from now, and with being more specific on the goal, you will be able to create and strategize your action plans to get there. You will start looking at the requirements of regional manager and the steps to get there, where you are today, how many steps away are you from the regional manager. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals. By being specific, you will assess how realistic and achievable your goals. In short, setting SMART goals helps to translate your goals to action plans to reach the goals. Expert said we can’t chase some abstract. We need to have the sense of the goals/dreams. With SMART goals, you will put senses to the goals - that is taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. With the visualization of the goals, you stand a better chance to achieve the goals. When the promise is clear, the price gets easy. ~ Jim Rohn
